Nuclear medicine in oncology

چکیده
Oncological applications of nuclear medicine have entered a new era as a result of a greater understanding of the biological characteristics of tumours and the increasing availability of Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Fluorine-i8 labelled flurodeoxyglucose has been shown to be effective in differentiating malignant from benign tumours and in determining the extent of disease. New opportunities exist for predicting and evaluating response to therapy. This paper sets out to explain and comment on some of the key developments in this field. It is not intended to be a comprehensive review but as a useful reference for those working on oncology.

Thallium - 201 imaging in osseous metastatic disease secondary to glioblastoma multiform
Thallium 201 whole body scintigraphy was performed in a 30 year old patient with diffuse osseous metastatic disease secondary to glioblastoma multiforme. Multiple sites of Thallium uptake correlated with the findings on serial bone scans and radiographs. Bone biopsy of a lower lumbar vertebra confirmed that the metastases were of glial origin.
متن کاملManagement of Thyroid carcinoma: Hahnemann experience
The primary treatment of thyroid carcinoma is surgery and the outcome depends on its extent. The post-operative management alternatives in thyroid carcinoma include thyroid hormone, radio-iodine ablation (I-131 Na), external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and occasionally adjuvant chemotherapy. This retrospective study analyzes the managements of 153 patients (102, 51), age range 10-96 yea...

Markedly elevated111 In labeled leukocyte activity suggestive of acute osteomyelitis was observed in a region of a composite mandibular allograft that was photon deficient on 99mTc MDP bone scintigraphy. This finding was later confirmed by surgical pathology. The patient was treated with intravenous antibiotics and returned two months later with persistent bone infection. The foHow-up thr...
متن کاملAxillary irradiation in breast cancer; does meticulous contouring make a difference?
Background: Due to the current trends towards replacing axillary dissection with radiotherapy, the need for more precise definition for different nodal stations becomes a must to ensure safe and adequate dose coverage. So, our study aimed to evaluate the coverage of axillary nodal volumes based on Project on Cancer of the Breast (PROCAB) guidelines, for cases previously treated with our standar...
متن کاملAbsorbed Dose Calculation In Irregular Blocked Radiation Fields: Evaluation of Clarkson’s Sector Integration Method for Radiation Fields Commonly Used in Conventional Radiotherapy
Introduction: Irregular/blocked fields are routinely used in radiotherapy. The doses of these fields are usually calculated by means of equivalent square method that is inherently prone to uncertainty. On the other hand, Clarkson’s sector integration method is a dose calculation method which offers far better accuracy in dose calculation of irregular fields. The Scatter Air Ratio (SAR) of an in...
متن کاملEffectiveness and complications of 153Sm-EDTMP in palliative treatment of diffuse skeletal metastases
Introduction: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety profile of bone palliative therapy following administration of 153Sm-EDTMP in patients with intractable metastatic bone pain. Methods: Sixteen patients (9 male, 7 female) aged 29-80 years (57.3±16.7 years) with severe metastasis-related bone pain resistant to analgesic medications were enrolled in the...
